Cacao Nibs vs Dark Chocolate: Which Is Actually Better?

by Mo Mandegar, PhD on Oct 04 2026
Most bags of cacao nibs are bought with real intent and finish the year at the back of the pantry. Nibs are genuinely the least processed form of cocoa, but the antioxidant gap between them and a good dark chocolate bar is smaller than the internet suggests, because flavanols track cocoa solids. The gap that is real is sugar: about 2 grams per 60-gram serving versus about 20. Here is the full comparison.
Bar chart of cocoa flavanol dose by study in milligrams: typical dark chocolate serving 136 to 440, trials with no effect at 415 and 500, and improved focus at 520 and 993

Does Dark Chocolate Help With Focus? What Studies Show

by Mo Mandegar, PhD on Sep 22 2026
At three in the afternoon, a square of 70% stops being a snack and becomes a strategy. The research behind that instinct is real but narrower than the headlines: cocoa flavanols changed brain oxygenation in a 2020 trial, and improved performance only on the hardest task. Here is what each study actually dosed, and how far a 40-gram serving sits from it.

Is Dark Chocolate Actually Healthy? What Research Shows

by Mo Mandegar, PhD on Sep 19 2026
Every eighteen months a cocoa study lands and a bar of 70% becomes a health food for a week. The research is usually real; the arithmetic is what gets lost. The largest trial used 600 milligrams of flavanols a day, a 40-gram serving of dark chocolate delivers 136 to 440, plus the sugar. Here is the honest version, including the variable most coverage skips entirely.

Is Cacao a Superfood? What the Science Actually Says

by Mo Mandegar, PhD on Jun 12 2026
The cacao bean carries more folklore than almost any food, and modern science has spent two decades sorting the real nutrition from the marketing. Raw cacao ranks among the most antioxidant-dense foods measured and supplies magnesium, iron, and mood compounds like theobromine. Here is what the evidence supports, what it doesn't, and why heavy processing quietly strips away most of the benefit.
